The most important thing you can do at home to support your child's learning is to read with them every day. You can read to them, listen to them read to you, and ask them questions about the book you are reading. You can read the books they bring home from school, their Bug Club books, or books you have at home. Reading - in any language - helps a child to learn in many important ways.
Bug Club is an online reading programme paid for by the school which means your child can read books at home. The books are targeted at your child's reading level - teachers allocate your child's books in line with their phonics level. The children read the books and answer questions, and the teacher can see their answers and mark them. The teacher can check books at any time and allocate new books as needed. We ask parents to listen to their children read on Bug Club for:
- 5-10 minutes every day in Reception and Year 1
- 10-15 minutes every day in Years 2
We will be holding parent workshops to introduce you to Bug Club and give you your child's log in details.
In October 2021 we held our first parent workshops on early reading for two years - it was wonderful to be able to welcome our parents back into school! We talked about the difference that reading at home every day can have on children's reading progress, and introduced parents to Bug Club, our fabulous online reading platform. And as you can see, the children loved showing off their amazing reading skills to their parents!
